City Lodge Hotel Gateway, Umhlanga, KZN

Team: Ivor Daniel, Michelle Quarmby,

City Lodge Gateway in Umhlanga was developed as part of a new generation of urban hotels for the City Lodge group, shifting away from conventional suburban hotel models toward a more integrated, street-responsive architecture. Located on Palm Boulevard within the Gateway precinct, the project sought to engage directly with the emerging urban fabric of Umhlanga’s new town centre.

The challenge was to reconcile the operational efficiency of a mid-range hotel with the demands of a dense, pedestrian-oriented urban environment. The building needed to provide secure, efficient guest accommodation while also contributing positively to the public realm and responding to the prominent corner site at Fountain Court.

The design expresses this urban integration through a curved street façade and a strong corner element defined by glazed circulation spaces, including a feature stair and view lift. A publicly accessible internal courtyard forms the heart of the hotel, providing a landscaped retreat that contrasts with the surrounding commercial activity. Large expanses of glazing reinforce the connection between interior and exterior spaces, while basement parking removes vehicles from the streetscape, preserving pedestrian quality at ground level.

The completed hotel establishes a refined urban presence within the Gateway precinct, balancing privacy and public engagement. Its courtyard-driven layout, articulated corner form and contextual response to street edges redefine the traditional hotel typology as an active contributor to the city’s evolving urban framework.
